joreth: (Bad Computer!)

Please forward this on to everyone you know who might need help with spammers, but PLEASE do not list anyone else's email address when you forward it!  Send this email as a Blind Carbon Copy (BCC).  If you have to put something in the To: field, I have created a fake email account just for this purpose.  You can put [email protected] in the To: field to protect all legitimate email addresses from being seen.  Add this email address to your address books and use it anytime because no one will be reading any email sent to this address.  And make sure to DELETE all email address headers from the previous person before sending this on to someone else.  When you forward any email, it should look as though you've written it yourself, with no "original message" information at the top, no annoying > at the line breaks, and definately NO ONE ELSE'S EMAIL ADDRESS visible.

There is a very simple way that you can contribute to the end of spam flooding your mailbox. A lot of mail clients have a "this is spam" button that you can report to them, but the REAL people you need to report it to is the SPAMMER'S MAIL CLIENT. But, how do you know who to report it to? And doesn't take a lot of time?

Well, it's actually pretty simple. When you get an email that is unsolicited advertising, here's what you do:

  • ~ View the FULL HEADERS for your incoming mail (tips on how to do that with different mail clients below).
  • ~ Then, open another browser window and go to http://www.spamcop.com
  • ~ Copy and paste the ENTIRE email along with the FULL HEADERS into the big text field right in the middle of the page.
  • ~ Hit the "Interrogate" button.
  • ~ Give it a moment. When the page refreshes, underneath the text field you will see the words "report to:" and an email address (or several). Copy that (those) email address(es) and go back to your email window. (don't worry about the string of numbers in parentheses ... it doesn't matter of you copy those or not)
  • ~ Forward the spam to the email address(es) that spamcop gave you. Make sure the spam is forwarded INLINE (not as an attachment) and that the FULL HEADERS are also part of the text. If your email client does not include full headers when you forward, simply go back to spamcop and copy the full headers there and paste them at the top of your forwarded email.
  • ~ Change the subject line from "Fw: blah blah" to "SPAM: blah blah". Then hit "send"
  • ~ Then go back and report that email as spam to your own email client if you have that option.

The more times a person is reported as a spammer, the more likely that person is to be punished for spamming.  If you received unsolicited advertising that you know you did NOT sign up for, and it has a link at the bottom that says "click here to be removed from the mailing list" ... DON'T CLICK THERE.  It's just another way for spammers to harvest your email address.  That way, they know your email address is valid and they can get more money when they sell it to other spammers.

Ebay and Paypal are both victims of fake account spam! If you have an account with either, and you have ever responded to an email that said your account is going to be suspended or they're updating their security, go directly to Ebay or Paypal and change all your security information and passwords now!  It doesn't hurt to periodically change your passwords anyway.  The most secure passwords are more than 6 characters and contain uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and do not have a "real word" in it; for example:  wuV44kEp69.

How to Get Full Headers From AOL

The email files are in an html format. The objective is to save the file in html format. This can be done as follows:

  • Open the email message you want to save, as if you were reading it
  • Move mouse cursor to the top tool bar, click on "File"
  • Move mouse cursor to "Save as..." and click.
  • Identify which directory you would like to save the file in. This is done using the normal save function of Windows. If you are not real comfortable with directories, save the file in "Desktop". This will have the file icon visible on you regular desktop screen and very easy to find later on.
  • Provide a name of the file in the "file name" box.
  • Select the "type" as "html" if possible. If your browser does not show "html" type, just select the type as "All Files" and add ".html" to the file name generated in step 6, such as email.html. The "dot" before the html extension is important. The objective of this step is to have the extension of the file as an "html" type file.
  • Press "Save".

To forward the file to someone else (law enforcement, lawyer, ISP):

  • Move cursor to the top tool bar and click on "Write"
  • Insert the email address you want to forward the file to
  • Type any info in the body of the message, if needed
  • To add the html file you just generated in the above steps, click on "Attachments"
  • When the "Attachments Window" opens, click on "Attach"
  • Find the file in the directory window and highlight the file name. If you followed the "Desktop" instructions, the directory name is "c:\desktop". If there are too many files that appear, type "*.html" in the file name. The use of the asterisk (also called a star by some) lists all files that are html.
  • Click on "open"
  • Click on "OK"
  • Click on "Send now"
  • The message and attached file have now been sent.

Please be aware that AOL only keeps messages in your INBOX for two weeks, unless you save it as NEW or save it in a separate folder in your AOL directory on your computer.

Additionally, a screen name of TOSEMAIL1 has been identified as a source of help for unacceptable email in the AOL system. Just enter tosemail1 in the "send to" screen. If you are outside of the AOL environment, the address is [email protected].

Please go to keyword HELP on AOL for further information.
