Huh, I had no idea it was optional. I was always under the impression that it was mandatory, which is one of the main reasons why I objected. My memory (which, granted, is very fallible) is that we would get in trouble if we didn't stand up and recite it.
I agree, it is not an option if you're never told it's an option, particularly at an age and in an institution where obedience to authority is one of the main tenants.
